A new study by the Department of Psychology at the University of Wuerzburg in Germany suggests that eating popcorn while watching movies could make advertisements less effective. Researchers asked 96 Germans to watch a movie, starting off with different advertisements. Half of the audience were handed popcorn and refilled constantly. The other half of the audience only received a small sugar cube. A few weeks after, the audience were asked to list the different products that were advertised during the screening. The ones with popcorn were not able to list as much as the other half. The researchers hypothesize that the chewing motion of popcorn might have something to do with this effect. In order for people to remember something, they have to "say" it to themselves. This could involve speaking the word out loud or reading the product hearing it in your head. Convinced?
